My Leica Q2 Thumb Support has arrived and it is worth the wait. I tried a generic model and it just didn’t feel natural to me so I have used the camera naked waiting for the Leica brand accessory. I received one of the first Leica Q2 cameras but just received the Thumb Support. The wait was just over 7 months.
I am so glad that I held out for the Leica thumb grip. The Q2 is small and light which makes it a great companion for all day shooting. The small size can be a blessing and a curse. It is so small and light that I occasionally have trouble holding the camera as steady for slow shutter speeds. This is a common problem with small cameras.
The Leica thumb grip allows me to get a good firm hold of the camera. If your an one handed shooter the grip makes for more contact with the camera. I always hold the camera with two hands, just the way that I learned to shoot. Even with image stabilization I’m a stickler for keeping the camera as steady as I can.
Notice that button on the grip below the shutter speed dial? That is the selector for the digital zoom. The Q2 has presets for different focal lengths but where the button is located it would normally be covered by the attachment. Leica has designed a button that is built into the grip that when pressed transfers the push to the digital zoom button. Nicely done.
Do I like the Leica Thumb Support? My answer is, why is not included with the camera? It is perfectly designed. The camera is much easier to hold with the grip extending outward instead of having an indentation going into the camera. If your buying a Q2, which I recommend, I say order the grip at the same time. It completes the camera.
